Pasture-Raised Hens: Roaming & Regenerating
Our laying hens enjoy a pasture-centered lifestyle, foraging about and living in a custom-built 12’x28’ mobile layer coop — fondly known as the "Eggmobile." This innovative structure features roosting bars, nesting boxes and a rainwater collection system, ensuring our hens have everything they need while on the move.
Every few days, we relocate the Eggmobile to a new section of pasture, allowing the hens to scratch, peck, and forage on a diverse diet of grasses, bugs, and seeds. But they're not just roaming willy-nilly — they're playing a crucial role in our farm's regenerative cycle. Our laying hens follow the cows and sheep on their rotational grazing schedule, just as wild birds once followed herds of buffalo across the prairie. As the ruminants move to fresh pasture, the hens move in behind them, naturally breaking up manure, controlling parasites, and fertilizing the soil with their own nutrient-rich droppings. This symbiotic relationship mimics nature, creating a healthier ecosystem while improving pasture health. The result? Deep orange yolks, rich flavor, and eggs packed with omega-3s, vitamins A, D, and E — a stark contrast to conventional eggs from confined factory-farmed hens.
In addition to their foraged diet, we supplement with a locally milled, non-GMO grain blend, ensuring balanced nutrition year-round.
By working with nature instead of against it, our hens live stress-free, productive lives, contributing not only to the health of our farm but also to the production of clean, nutrient-dense food for our community.
